The Douglas Fir Trail
The intimate forested landscape along the Douglas Fir Trail located in Edworthy Park just west of Calgary’s downtown has been safely thriving for centuries. Perched on a large dramatic rock escarpment above the Bow River, this natural sanctuary is home to 400-year-old Rocky Mountain Douglas-firs; the most easterly standing population of its kind in the country. In addition to the stoic firs, the trail passes through densely populated stands of giant Balsam Poplar and iconic White Spruce. With its tipsy towering trees, diverse native shrubs and flowers, and groundwater discharging in dozens of springs fully visible in winter, this trail is without any doubt home to an array of natural gems worth cherishing and protecting.
